Celebrating International Earth Day
As we celebrate International Earth Day (22 April), Commonwealth Sport reflects on the importance of sustainability and protecting the global environment.
Earlier this year, Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) in the Americas and Caribbean region engaged in a tree planting initiative spanning five countries. Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago all participated in planting trees to demonstrate the collective commitment to sustainability across the Commonwealth.
A total of 293 seedlings were planted throughout the nations, uniting sport and sustainability in powerful collective action.
Beyond its symbolic value, the initiative carries real environmental impact. The planting of these seedlings contributes to the reduction of key greenhouse gases most responsible for trapping heat in the atmosphere and driving climate change; and trees are one of nature's most effective tools in absorbing and offsetting them. This initiative aligns directly with our goal to become a greener more sustainable Movement.
CGAs rallied their networks to bring this initiative to life, engaging executive members, staff, athletes, national sporting organisations, and schools ensuring that the friendships and spirit experienced on the day were felt at every level of the sporting community and beyond.
